Tamworth and the Railways

Tamworth was served by two railway lines the first to arrive was the Birmingham and Derby Junction railway in 1839. It was to accommodate this line that the viaduct over the River Anker had to be built this is known locally as "The Nineteen Arches". Eight years later in 1847 the Trent Valley line arrived to serve the town. These two lines both used the same station although the lines themselves were built on different levels.
As with many of Tamworth's buildings the lovely station pictured below was knocked down in the name of progress in the 1960's when the railway was electrified.
