Colehill this street was known as Cross Street in medieval times because of the stone cross that once stood there. One of the oldest pubs in the town, the Stone Cross also takes it's name from this bygone relic.
The street was once lined with many fine houses amongst these was William
McGregor's vicarage with is now a part of the Co-op store that
he helped to found in the town. The picture on the right shows part of the Co-operative
building on the left-hand side of the street. Below is another illustration of the same
street looking from the opposite end in 1829 approximately 100 years before the postcard was produced.
One of the many fine illustrations of Tamworth by a local artist named Etienne Bruno
Hamel, who was twice the Mayor of Tamworth.
