The Peel Schools

The Peels were responsible for providing several schools for the town over the years. In 1820 the father of the future Prime Minister established a school in Church Street in an existing school building. This was situated in a courtyard off Church Street known as "The Old School Yard". This building was quickly outgrown and a new building was provided by Sir Robert Peel in 1837 this time situated in Lichfield Street. However this too was soon outgrown and a new school was built nearly opposite the 1837 school.

1850 Peel School

This cost approximately £1000 to build and catered for around 50 free pupils plus a few more who paid 10 shillings (50 pence) a quarter for their education, it was run by two schoolmasters and opened in 1851. Both of the Lichfield Street buildings are still in existence today.  The earlier building is now a Betting shop and the building pictured forms part of the Shannons Mill housing complex.
