Early Co-op Store

The picture on the left shows the Tamworth Industrial Co-operative Society's shop which was based in no's 118/119 Lichfield Street as can be seen from the sign in the window they were paying a dividend of 1s/4d in the pound, that's equivalent to around 6 or 7p today.Along with the premises shown there were also shops in Church Street, Orchard Street and Colehill. Employees of the Co-op as it was/is known also had their own Club and Institute in Offa Street the Leys.The Society also owned it's own farms where much of it's produce came from.

The picture on the right shows the premises in Church Street that the Co-op eventually acquired, although at the time this card was sent (1908)the shop still belonged to Alfred Sadler who was a well known grocer in the town he was also the town's Mayor in 1884.
