The Old Bell Inn

The Old Bell Inn was a large imposing half timbered building which stood at the corner of Lower Gungate and Aldergate. I am not sure when it dates back to but it was mentioned in the 1818 edition of " A New Directory of the County of Stafford", when it was run by one W.Weston. The 1960's saw the demolition of the place, but even today the area where it stood is still referred to by locals as the "Bell Corner". In 1880 the place was kept by a Miss Sarah Knight some time between 1896 and 1912 the address of the Old Bell changed from 40 to 61 Gungate when the street must have been renumbered.
